Summer Training Programs

Posted by Dave Johnson on May 8th 2008 in Training Information, Team Communication, Events

Just another month of school and then a great three months of summer!  What are you going to do to stay in great shape for the sports that you love? Here are two excellent possibilities for skiers in the Duluth area:

Summer Youth Program Registration Open

Registration is open for DXC’s third annual Summer Youth Training Program (June 9—August 1). Coached by André Watt, Anders Osthus, and Nikolai Anikin, the eight-week program offers morning or afternoon sessions of ski-specific activities (roller skiing, strength, ski-walking, etc.). It’s a fun way to build and maintain fitness, learn from experienced coaches, and get to know athletes from other schools. Subsidized by proceeds from the Banff Mt. Film Festival, the program costs only $75 for the summer.

Duluth Rowing Club

Pre-season registration is now open for the Duluth Rowing Club. The DRC provides instruction, coaching and daily training for Jr. High, Senior High and Adult folks interested in an exciting and fun sport. The open house for the Duluth Rowing Club will be on Saturday, May 17, 2008 from 10am to 12 noon.

Followed by:

Junior Parent Meeting
Saturday May 17 @ 12:00pm

We will be meeting with all Junior Rower Parents after the Open House.

ASV Scout SC-50 a Versatile Vehicle for Ski Trails

Posted by Dave Johnson on April 3rd 2008 in Grooming

Scout SC-50Grooming ski trails and setting up race courses is one of my favorite activities. I am always on the lookout for ways to improve the job that I can do or for equipment that will make the job easier. When I first saw a picture of the ASV Scout SC-50 I was intrigued. From the picture it looked to be just the perfect vehicle to fill the gap between a snowmobile and a large Pisten Bully type of vehicle. I made some inquires with the ASV folks and was put in touch with Hannah Tanata at ASV. She invited me to tour the factory and share with her my thoughts about the Scout as a grooming vehicle. Hannah also offered the use of a Scout to support Marshall hosting a Super Tour Sprint Race.

ASV delivered the Scout SC-50 early in January 2008 and we had use of it on the Marshall Campus until the middle of March. The model that ASV delivered had an enclosed cab, dump box and plow.

What did we use the Scout for and how did it perform?

Information Pdf

Dear Biathlon Supporters-
The North American Championships/ US National Championships will be held at Mt Itasca next week- March 20, 21, 22, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Note that with changing weather conditions, races may start earlier than initially planned.

This is the biggest biathlon event yet to be held at Mt Itasca- we hope that any parents, ex-athletes or long time supporters would be interested in coming up to watch and help out running the races.

If you can come up for one, two, or all three days to help out, please email oonadog@northlc.com or call 218/245-3522 Paula Byrne, Volunteer coordinator, with the dates you can come up, and what tasks you would prefer to help with.

As you increased the intensity (workload) during your exercise or workout, your body responds differently at the various levels of exercise. Your body using aerobic energy sources at the lower intensity levels and anaerobic energy sources at the upper levels of intensity. These are different physiological “Zones” of your metabolism and are mostly driven by your heart and lung’s ability to provide sufficient oxygen to you body.

Although speed training may seem like a fairly basic part of our training, the truth is sometimes the shortest bursts of energy take the most thought. Over the past few years there have been several advances in the way we approach our speed training to ensure we’re getting the most out of each session. Different techniques like over speed, drop in speed, and power speed have emerged to help get us moving faster than ever.

Just like our distance and intensity training needs to progress over the year, the same goes for speed workouts. To be doing the same speed workout in January as I did in May won’t give me the same benefit due to the training effect. Just like any activity, if we do the same thing over and over again our muscles will just get used that specific activity and before long there won’t be any physical gains whatsoever.

I will try to clarify where and when to perform these different speeds.

Coach Nikolai Anikin Wins Mora Vasaloppet

Mora Vasaloppet Coverage
February 10, 2008 by Bruce Adelsman
A surprising number of hardy skiers turned out for one of the coldest Mora Vasaloppet races on record, braving wind chills in the 30-below range and temperatures in the double-digits below zero. All categories, 58km, 35km, and classic division, skied the same 35km course over slow and sandpaper-like snow. Skiers had two allies, however: bright sunshine and the strong wind coming out of the north/northwest which pushed them from Warman down to the finish in Mora. Skiers fragmented into numerous small packs to combat the bitter cold and slow conditions, with an elite pack of just 5 skiers in the 58km division. To the excitement of those lining the streets of Mora, the big race came down to a sprint finish, with Nikolai Anikin just edging out friend Adam Swank at the line.
